Gluten Free Kitchen Fires

January15

So I redecorated the kitchen a little over a week ago… Then I caught it on fire Tuesday.

I had baked a cookie cake the other day and it overflowed the pan big time. So I had large amounts of cookie in my oven. I had company so I just turned it off and left it to clean later when I didn’t have 20 kids running around. I forgot about it.

I was having friends come over for lunch Tuesday and turned the oven on to pre-heat. I came into the kitchen a little while later to smoke POURING out of the oven. I looked inside and there were flames!! I opened it and sure enough the cookie in the bottom of the oven had combusted and was on fire. It was impressive. I picked up the phone and called Neil to ask him what to do. I wasn’t sure if I should pour water on it or if that would hurt the oven (it was on fire what was going to happen worse), or if it would spread the fire. He said to throw flour on it.

I was standing there thinking about what he said and asked him WHAT KIND OF FLOUR???? Now when you don’t have food allergies you just have plain run of the mill flour. When you are allergic to gluten you have 12 different flours in the cabinets. Did I use aramanth, arrowroot, gluten free oat, cornstarch, cornmeal, brown rice, white rice, sweet white rice, fava bean, potoato flour, sourgum flour, coconut flour, potato starch, garbanzo bean, bean flour, or any of the others…. you get the idea… would some feed the fire or would it put it out???? I stood debating it while my oven just burned away with the door shut. The other issue I debated was which would cost the least… if I was going to throw a bad of flour on the fire which would cost the least because specialty flour is EXPENSIVE Neil finally just said to get a damp bath towel and smother it. That worked nicely.

After the crisis was over I found it very very funny and wondered if any other people had ever run into the same situation. I googled what flour to use but didn’t find an answer. I did find that salt works, so would a fire extinguisher…. I will make sure to have both on hand in the future!!

Redecorating

January3

Dan and Mindy got me gift cards for christmas to Home Depot and Hobby Lobby! Neil and I spent most of his time off redecorating the kitchen, dining room, and living room!

We removed wallpaper in the kitchen and dining room, retextured the walls, then painted them. We painted all the cabinets and wood in the kitchen and dining room, then replaced all hardware. We also recovered the chairs in the dining room, and got new curtains and a new hanging system. The rooms look AWESOME!!!

The living room and hallway, we painted the walls and the woodwork. We had the carpets cleaned and a couple we are friends with gave us a giftcard to get new area carpets for the living room. It looks great too!!

I had friends come over and help me paint the bulk of the rooms which was GREAT!!! Then a couple we are friends with came over and helped us do second coats and do the chairs and remount all the cabinets doors and hardware!! I’m telling you it pays to have good friends!! LOL!! We are blessed!!

I will add photos to the albums soon!!

Tattoo

January3

I have been wanting to get a tattoo sometime for autism awareness.

I finally did it. Chase officially tested out as being on the autism spectrum December of 2007. So I chose to get my tattoo on year later. Partly to mark how far we have come in ONE YEAR, and partly for awareness.

It has been a very very long year but we have made soooo much progress as a family and Chase has personally. I am so very hopeful that with all the interventions we are taking with the help and support of family and friends that we will one day lose our diagnosis!!

I am very excited to see what is to come!  Oh my tattoo is on the inside of my right wrist.

Cup Game

January3

On the way back from Texas we stopped in at Ikea. This was the first time we went with all of the boys in tow. It was an experience in and of itself.

Towards the end Chase finds a display of cilinder shaped lamps wrapped in plastic. He starts poking his hands through the tops of the wrapper like you would poke your finger through the wrapping of a roll of papertowels or toilet paper. But he’s not using just his finger but his hand. Neil is trying to remove his hands without breaking the lamps and as he grabs one hand Chase’s other hand is into another lamp. It was like trying to catch the mole while playing whack-a-mole. It was rather comical to think of later. In the end Chase ended up breaking one lamp and they were very nice about it and just picked it up and cleaned it up.

As we were driving home we were talking about it. Neil and I were laughing saying we need to quicken our reflexes. We then were both laughing as I got the image of Neil playing the stacking cup game from the early 90’s to learn to quicken his reflexes. We decided that when a parent has a child diagnosed with autism that they should get a care basket. Things in it would be more practical child proofing items that last longer than toddlerhood, a few good books, random coping strategies and tools, and the cup game!!! It was a really funny conversation though you probably had to be there to get it!!! :0)

Christmas Eve

January3

Christmas Eve Neil had to work and Aiden was spending the day with Dan and Mindy. Neil got off early and met the younger boys and I at church for the early Christmas even service at church. They had some of the string section from the philharmonic out to do some special music that was awesome! The service was great.

Afterwards we ran home and started cooking dinner. All of Neil’s family came over to eat dinner and then we celebrated Christmas and did the present thing! It was a lot of fun as usual! The boys got WAAAAY too much stuff as usual, and we ended the night with a kitchen FULL of wrappings and trash. It was NUTS!!! The boys all got exactly what they wanted! Aiden got all kinds of video games, and heelyz, legos, and star wars stuff. Chase was VERY into Christmas this year. It’s been the first year he cared about it. He got all kinds of cool stuff but his vmotion was the highlight. Alex was as enthusiastic as ever and got lots of legos and star wars toys like Aiden. He was THRILLED!!! Oh and Neil and Aiden got video game chairs!! They were both very excited about those!!!

We had a great time with family! Afterwards I packed till after midnight for our trip the next day…
